Through a call for action by our college coach, Berkeley Wave Makers came together and began the planning initiative for a “campus meet-up group.” Over 20 CAP students attended the initial planning meeting and discussed the structure and governance for what would later be known as the “Wave Makers of Berkeley.”
Our first general meeting was held on campus & live-streamed online. Members in attendance approved the Constitution for our student group and voted in our inaugural executive board. Many members of this inaugural executive remained with us today serving the Wave Maker community on campus.
Our first campus meetup was held at Victory Point Cafe where all CAP students who could make it came to meet other CAP students at UC Berkeley. This was a chance for CAP students to build community and learn more about the Wave Maker of Berkeley. Over 30 Berkeley students joined us and bonded with other CAP students with pizza and board games.
We were able to solidify a brand that symbolizes our mission while reflecting a design that appeals to our audience, CAP students of UC Berkeley, with the help of Innovative Design at Berkeley. This has helped us recruit more students and become more noticeable as a student organization rather than a scholarship program.
We hosted the first-ever student-led extension program for CAP Summer Bridge, the first of its kind for any Wave Maker college campuses. Ten volunteers of current Berkeley Wave Makers came during summer break to introduce our campus to our latest addition, the BA-4 cohort.
After a full academic year on campus, the Executive Board has decided to expand service & leadership roles by adding three core project committees--Education, Programming, and Publicity & Outreach--welcoming 12 new team members on this journey of community engagement.
We developed a monthly newsletter to help CAP students be up to date with any resources or events that can professionally or personally develop students. After many iterations, we were able to find a structure that can present important announcements for CAP students, resources and highlight CAP students and their educational journey.
Due to COVID-19 we were not able to host our yearly Wave Makers of Berkeley summer bridge. We then adjusted our resources to engage virtually which is where we created a three part video that introduces WMB and gives educationally and personal tips and resources on how to successfully navigate the university.
We created a course advising session to help new students transition to a virtual fall semester. See below for a list of resources we have prepared!
Wave Makers of Berkeley created and presented a workshop at the “I am a wave-maker conference” about “Building a Community of CAP Students in College”. Workshop attendees learned ways to build community and navigate college as new students, as well as a blueprint in starting and managing a campus organization.
Wave Makers of Berkeley welcomed the new MWA-18 cohort and presented about ways to get involved with the organization in addition to opportunities to receive WMB merchandise. Wave Makers also shared advice with the incoming freshmen and their experiences of coaching within the program.
Wave Makers returned to campus for a hybrid of in-person and remote instruction due to COVID-19. Wave Makers of Berkeley focused on reconnecting, rebuilding organization culture, and planning a combination of virtual meetings and in-person events including a Study Jam with boba and snacks.
